Labrador Colours Explained: Black, Yellow, Chocolate, Fox Red and Silver

Labrador Retrievers come in three officially recognised colours — black, yellow, and chocolate — with fox red sitting within the yellow category and a set of dilute variations (silver, charcoal, champagne) that sit outside the breed standard. Each colour is the result of specific gene combinations. Here’s what you need to know about all of them, including what the genetics actually mean and what colour does and doesn’t affect.

The three recognised Labrador colours

Black Labrador

Black is the dominant colour in Labradors and historically the most common — particularly in working and field-trial lines. A black Lab carries at least one dominant B allele (black pigment) and at least one dominant E allele (allows pigment expression). Black Labs can carry hidden recessive genes for yellow or chocolate, which is why two black Labs can occasionally produce puppies of other colours if both parents carry the right recessives. Black has no documented effect on health or temperament.

Yellow Labrador

Yellow Labs carry two recessive e alleles, which prevent black or brown pigment from appearing in the coat. The result is a wide range of shades — from very pale cream to deep golden-red (fox red) — all of which are genetically yellow. Yellow is the most popular colour for guide and assistance dogs, partly due to their visual appeal and partly because of strong working lines developed in the yellow category.

Chocolate Labrador

Chocolate Labs carry two recessive b alleles, diluting black pigment to brown. They’re less common because producing chocolate requires both parents to carry the recessive gene. Chocolate Labs have distinctively brown noses, eye rims, and paw pads rather than the black pigmentation of other colours.

A 2018 UK study found chocolate Labs have a shorter median lifespan (10.7 years) compared to yellow and black Labs (12.1 years). The reason appears genetic — the narrower gene pool associated with maintaining the chocolate colour has concentrated certain health vulnerabilities. This doesn’t affect every chocolate Lab, but it’s real data worth knowing before choosing a puppy.

Fox red: the fourth “colour” explained

Fox red Labs are genetically yellow — they’re the darkest end of the yellow spectrum, with higher levels of phaeomelanin (red pigment) producing a rich, russet coat. They’re registered as yellow by both the AKC and Kennel Club. Fox red has become increasingly popular and some breeders market them as rare or premium — they’re not. They’re yellow Labs with a particular shade, and don’t warrant a significant price premium over other yellow Labs from the same lines.

One note: fox red Labs often darken slightly in the first year as their adult coat comes through, then may lighten slightly with age. The final shade at around 18 months is typically the most stable.

Dilute colours: silver, charcoal, and champagne

These three colours — silver (dilute chocolate), charcoal (dilute black), champagne (dilute yellow) — are produced by the dilute gene (d locus) and sit outside the recognised breed standard. They’re controversial for several reasons:

  • Not recognised by the AKC or Kennel Club as standard Labrador colours
  • The presence of the dilute gene in Labradors is disputed — some breed historians believe it entered through historical crossbreeding with Weimaraners

Does colour affect temperament?

No — there’s no systematic evidence that Labrador colour affects temperament. The persistent belief that “chocolate Labs are crazier” or “yellow Labs are calmer” is better explained by breeding line differences than colour itself. Field-line Labs (which skew toward working colours, often black) tend to be more driven and energetic. Show-line Labs (which include a wider range of colours) tend to be calmer. A calm chocolate Lab from show lines will typically be more relaxed than a high-drive black Lab from working lines. The colour is not the variable — the breeding line is.

Does colour affect shedding?

No. All Labradors have the same double-coat structure regardless of colour, and all shed the same amount. How the colour genes actually work

Labrador colour comes down to two genes working together: the B locus and the E locus. The B locus controls whether pigment is black (dominant B) or brown/chocolate (recessive b). The E locus controls whether that pigment is allowed to show in the coat at all — a dog with two recessive e alleles produces no black or brown pigment in the fur regardless of what the B locus says, which is why yellow Labs can carry chocolate genetics you’d never see from looking at them.

Does coat colour affect price?

It shouldn’t, but in practice it often does — and not always for good reasons. Chocolate Labs sometimes command a premium simply because they’re less common in a given litter, not because they’re a better dog. Fox red and dilute colours (silver, charcoal, champagne) are the ones most likely to be marketed at inflated prices using words like “rare” or “exclusive.” For fox red, that’s misleading since it’s simply a shade of standard yellow. The price variable that actually matters is the same regardless of colour: health testing of both parents (hips, elbows, eyes, and DNA panels for EIC and CNM), the reputation of the breeding line, and how the puppies are raised in the first eight weeks. A well-bred black Lab from health-tested parents is a better investment than a poorly-bred “rare” colour with no testing behind it, at almost any price difference.

Do Labrador colours change with age?

Beyond the fox red darkening pattern already covered, most Labs show subtle colour shifts as they mature. Black Labs can develop a slight brownish or rusty tinge to their coat in strong sun, which is sun bleaching rather than a genetic change. Yellow Labs sometimes lighten noticeably from puppyhood to adulthood — a puppy that looks nearly white at 8 weeks may settle into a warmer cream or gold by 18 months. My take: colour matters less than line

If you’re choosing a Labrador puppy, colour is the least important variable. The breeding line, health testing of the parents, and the temperament of both parents tell you far more about the dog you’ll end up with than the colour of their coat. That said, if you’re set on a specific colour — particularly chocolate — the lifespan data is worth factoring into your thinking, not as a reason to rule it out, but as a reason to look especially carefully at the health history of the specific lines you’re considering.
